The OnePlus Nord may be OnePlus' attempt to build a budget phone, but you wouldn't know that from using the device. It's that screen that blew us away when testing the OnePlus Nord.

Not only do you get the fast refresh rate — a feature that's been restricted to handsets that cost hundreds of dollars more — the 6.

You'll make some compromises with the OnePlus Nord. The phone's Snapdragon G chipset can't match the performance of the A13 Bionic-powered iPhone SE, though that Qualcomm chipset does mean the Nord can connect with faster 5G networks.

Despite all those cameras — a main lens, ultra wide sensor, macro lens and depth sensor on the back and a wide angle shooter joining a regular selfie cam on the front — OnePlus' photo processing software still renders colors coolly.

But for this price, it's hard to argue with the features you do get. With sales restricted to Europe and India initially, we hope that the Nord proves so popular that OnePlus can't resist offering US shoppers this great smartphone value.

Read our full OnePlus Nord review. Samsung has three strong phones in its Galaxy S20 lineup, but the Galaxy S20 Plus is the one that places highest on our best phone list, because it offers the best overall mix of features for the money.

That's especially true since the Galaxy S20 Plus boasts some pretty impressive cameras in its own right. The new sensors capture bright and colorful photos, and the 3x lossless zoom is more powerful than what the iPhone 11 Pro Max delivers.

Read our full Samsung Galaxy S20 Plus review. That's largely because it has the very same Snapdragon processor, along with a dazzling 90Hz display and a compelling design that comes in lots of eye-catching colors.

You also get 5G connectivity and colorful 6. If we had one gripe about the OnePlus 8, it'd have to be the phone's disappointing triple-lens camera system, which simply doesn't capture photos as sharp and colorful as those from the firm's more premium device.

That said, if you can excuse images that look good but perhaps not great, the OnePlus 8 is one of the best smartphones for the money.

Read our full OnePlus 8 review. If folding phones ever take off, we'll have the Galaxy Z Flip to thank. This is the first folding phone we've seen to live up to the promise of foldables, thanks to Samsung's use of a classic design.

The Galaxy Z Flip resembles the flip phones of a generation ago. But unlike half-baked efforts like the Motorola Razr, the Galaxy Z Flip has a little something extra — a layer of ultra thin glass beneath that display that adds a feel of durability when you flip open the phone to reveal its 6.

Samsung also includes features that take advantage of that folding design. A Flex mode splits the screen in half, so that when you're using an app like YouTube, the video displays on the upper half of the Galaxy Z Flip's display while you can scroll for more info and leave comments using the screen's bottom half.

The Galaxy Z Flip support multitasking as well, letting you run multiple apps at once. Read our full Samsung Galaxy Z Flip review.

In order for a smartphone to make our best phone list, it needs to excel on several tests that we run on every handset. We perform some of these tests in our labs and some in the real world.

When it comes to performance, we rely on such synthetic benchmarks as Geekbench 5 and GFXBench to measure graphics performance.

These tests allow us to compare performance across iPhones and Android devices. We also run a real-world video transcoding test on each phone using the Adobe Premiere Rush app and time the result.

To measure the quality of a phone's display, we perform lab tests to determine the brightness of the panel in nits , as well as how colorful each screen is DCI-P3 color gamut.

In these cases, higher numbers are better. We also measure color accuracy of each panel with a Delta-E rating, where lower numbers are better and score of 0 is perfect.

One of the most important tests we run is the Tom's Guide battery test. We run a web surfing test over 5G or 4G at nits of screen brightness until the battery gives out.

In general, a phone that lasts 10 hours or more is good, and anything above 11 hours makes our list of the best phone battery life.

Last but not least, we take the best phones out in the field to take photos outdoors, indoors and at night in low light to see how they perform versus their closest competitors.

We take shots of landscapes, food, portraits and more, and also allow you to be the judge with side-by-side comparisons in our reviews. The Vivo V19 is the successor to the Vivo V17 and is yet another selfie-focused smartphone from the company.

Vivo has focused on the design and the build quality of the device and the V19 feels like a premium device. The body is made out of Corning Gorilla Glass 6 and feels premium to the touch.

Vivo also offers it in some interesting colours. Vivo also offers an in-display fingerprint scanner on the Vivo V19 which is quick to unlock the device.

Powering the smartphone is a Qualcomm Snapdragon SoC which is weak. It has a quad-camera setup at the back and a dual-camera setup for selfies.

Low-light camera performance is acceptable but shooting in night mode is a tad slow. This new smartphone is identical to the Redmi Note 9 Pro and shares a lot of core hardware as well.

It sports a big 6. The main reason for the bulk of this smartphone is the big 5,mAh battery of this smartphone. The smartphone can handle games well but it can get warm if you game for longer durations.

However, fast charging does cause the phone to get hot. The phone manages good shots during the day but it does sharpen the output.

In low-light, it manages to keep noise in check but the night mode does a far better job. Video is stabilised electronically and the Redmi Note 9 Pro Max does a very good job in daylight, low-light stabilisation causes a shimmer effect.

The Samsung Galaxy M31 sports a big 6. The Galaxy M31 is comfortable to hold in the hand but is a little heavy at g. The weight of the smartphone is mainly because of the big 6,mAh battery that it packs.

It has two storage variants to choose from, 64GB and GB. It runs Samsung OneUI 2. We found the Galaxy M31 to have a fair amount of bloatware onboard.

The Galaxy M31 has a quad-camera setup at the back with the primary being a megapixel shooter. It also houses an 8-megapixel ultra-wide-angle camera, a 5-megapixel macro camera and a 5-megapixel depth sensor.

The Poco X2 offers good value for money, with specifications and capabilities that few other companies can match in the sub-Rs.

The design, with its attention-grabbing circular patch on the rear and bright gradient finishes, might be a bit polarising but Poco has used Gorilla Glass 5 on the front and back for durability.

You get a large 6. The display is bright, and supports a Hz refresh rate as well as HDR, but we didn't find it to be too vibrant. This phone also boasts of a megapixel primary rear camera and it took very good stills in the daytime.

The night mode also helped low-light photos look good. The wide-angle and macro cameras are less useful but still nice to have.

Daytime videos looked good, but quality suffered a lot at night, especially when recording at 4K. Battery life was also quite good, but not spectacular.

Realme 5i shares the same design as the Realme 5 and the Realme 5s. The Realme 5i packs a 5,mAh battery which makes it a tad bulky at g.

Night mode helps deliver a better shot. Low-light video recording is below average and could do with a few tweaks. The Vivo U20 is from the online exclusive U series from Vivo.

The Vivo U20 sports a 6. The phone is a tad bulky at g which is mainly down to the 5,mAh battery that it packs.

Storage for both these variants remains the same at 64GB which is further expandable up to GB via a microSD card slot. The smartphone is available in Racing Black and Blaze Blue colour variants.

In the box, the smartphone comes with an 18W fast charger which helps top the device quickly. Vivo ships the U20 with Funtouch OS 9.

The V17 Pro also has a depth camera, which helps when shooting bokeh portraits. The megapixel selfie camera captures pleasing selfies and also supports Night mode.

The secondary 8-megapixel wide-angle camera lets you get a lot more people in one frame. Battery life is very good.

This new smartphone packs in a 6,mAh battery which is its highlight feature. The Galaxy M30s has a triple camera setup consisting of a megapixel primary sensor, an 8-megapixel ultra-wide-angle camera and a 5-megapixel depth sensor.

We were happy with the camera performance of the Galaxy M30s however, it was slow to focus while shooting macros.

Video recording tops out at 4K but lacks stabilisation. On the other hand, videos shot at p were stabilised.

We could use the Galaxy M30s for close to 2 days with our usage. The notches are both centralized like the Note 10, but they're much smaller this time around, and the S20 Plus only has a single lens.

The result: more screen. That is, to put it lightly, a lot, and frequently got us through over a day without recharging.

Keep in mind that battery life estimate will dip down if you set the refresh rate at Hz, use a ton of 5G connectivity or lend juice with Wireless PowerShare, so adapt accordingly if you're looking to keep your phone going longer.

Camera: The S20 and S20 Plus have truly spectacular cameras. No, not their 12MP main shooters, which are fine — it's the 64MP telephoto that really shines with a 3x optical zoom up from the usual 2x zoom.

The camera can also crop zoom to a muddy 30x digital zoom — which means the interim intervals are still a good deal more impressive than the competition.

The 12MP ultra-wide performs adequately, while the 10MP front-facing camera works great with fun filters. Another first-time bonus: 8K 24fps video from the rear camera.
